Choosing a dining table

There are only a few things to consider when choosing a dining table, but each is important in its own right:

Space available

This determines the size of the dining table and potentially the style of dining chairs.

Measure this carefully and make a floor plan so that you know how much space you have available. Don't forget to allow for the chairs to be pulled out before someone sits down.

Shape

Tables come in all shapes and sizes: round, square, oval or rectangular, many of these are also extendable, there are also folding or gateleg tables.

Style

Which room is the table to be placed - a kitchen-diner or a separate more formal dining room?

What is your current or proposed style of decoration - modern, retro, traditional, contemporary, antique or rustic?

Do you want the furniture in the room to match? If so perhaps a dining set is the most appropriate thing.

Number of people to be seated

This seems obvious but you should consider the maximum and minimum numbers.

Do you have family meals?

Do you have dinner parties with a large number of guests?

Do you need a table that can accomodate more than one of these needs?

Usage

You're obviously going to eat at the table but consider who will be eating - small children? adults? both?

Will the table be used for anything else - for example a hobby or to double up as a home office?

Budget

How much money do you have available and what would you like to spend? This determines what you can buy.

Dining tables and chairs are available to suit every type of budget.
